Renewal of Top Safety Accreditation

Compound Feed Engineering (CFE) have had their accreditation extended from Alcumus SafeContractor for achieving excellence in health and safety in the workplace.

Alcumus SafeContractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises extremely rigorous standards in health and safety management amongst contractors. It is used by thousands of organisations in the UK including SMEs and FTSE 100 companies.

Employing 20 people, CFE Ltd is principally involved in the pelleting sector.

The company’s renewal of the SafeContractor accreditation is driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business. SafeContractor accreditation will further enhance the company’s ability to win new contracts, and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.

Gemma Archibald, Director of Alcumus SafeContractor said: "Major organisations simply cannot afford to run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies in place."

"More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that CFE Group has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector. SafeContractor plays a vital role in supporting our clients in meeting their compliance needs, whilst working with their contractors as they progress through the accreditation process.”

Con Lynch (CEO) says Safecontractor accreditation shows the company’s commitment to safety which is viewed positively by our customers, staff and insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.

CFE Plan to invest €1m at Haydock facility

CFE are embarking on an expansion programme to develop and upgrade their die and roll refurbishing facilities in Haydock.  The investment will happen in two phases.  Phase one in 2016 is currently underway and phase two will be in 2017/18.  This is a reflection on growing business in their core area of die and roll refurbishing.

A new Danish manufactured high pressure water cleaning system to unblock pellet mill dies will be delivered in May.  This machine will operate at pressures of 15,000 psi.  It is the first of its kind in Western Europe using one nozzle to unblock holes versus two in the older version.  It will lead to increased efficiency, reduction in washing time and less water usage.  Operations Manager Hayley Langshaw states this will help CFE maintain our seven day turnaround in a growing market.

The new CNC die grinding machines will be installed to cope with the larger dies in the market place.  It will grind at 25% higher output than exiting models.  The new CNC countersinking machines will be suitable for the next generation of dies.  Countersinking can be done across the die as well as clockwise.  The machine can be programmed around problem areas of damage in the die face.  One countersinking machine and one die grinder will be installed in Q3 and Q4 of 2016.

We are replacing our Tecnowash machines on the roll refurbishing side.  This will cope with larger rolls, reduce wash cycles and improve efficiency.  CFE refurbish 2,500 roll assemblies at our Haydock facility and are the market leader in the UK and Ireland.

Con Lynch states that this investment is an expression of confidence in the market and a determination to give a better product and service to the customer.

                         CFE Feed Milling Symposium

On Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th May 2014 CFE hosted over 50 animal feed producers, representing over 80% of the feed production industry from across UK &  Ireland at their inaugural ‘Efficiency and Safety in the Feed Milling Industry’ symposium.  The event was held at the Thistle Hotel in Haydock, UK, adjacent to CFE’s plant where they service their Irish, UK and European customer base.

The event involved a structured programme of speakers on topical issues relating to animal feed production.  The first day of events covered the use of steam in the pelleting process presented by Spirax Sarco, an engaging presentation from Senior Consulting Scientist Ake Harmanny on Dust Explosion Hazards and ATEX in the feed industry.  Ake’s presentation included a simulated dust explosion which highlighted the ever present dangers in dusty environments.  Jack O’Hare of Co. Carlow based Adesco presented on the use of surfactants in achieving pelleting process efficiency.  The Q&A session also involved a presentation on the Role of Information Technology in Streamlining and Managing a Modern Feed Mill which was presented by Andrew Birch of Binary Consulting.

Thursday’s session started with an introduction to food safe lubricants by Petro-Canada who are represented by CFE in Ireland and the UK.  This presentation was keenly followed by all attendees who are acutely aware of managing the risks of toxins entering the food chain through animal feed production.  CFE are the exclusive agents in Ireland and the UK for CPM and were pleased to welcome Paul Alderliefste of CPM who gave an engaging presentation on the trends emerging in the feed milling industry as seen in his global role with CPM.  The two day event concluded with an overview of CFE’s offering as well as a tour of CFE’s state of the art plant in Haydock, UK which was attended by all to see first-hand the technology being deployed by CFE to improve pelleting efficiency through proactively managed consumable refurbishing and equipment re-engineering processes.

In his closing address CFE’s CEO Con Lynch reflected on the opportunities and challenges facing animal feed producers in a post quota EU environment of increasing regulation necessitating a focus on efficient and safe animal feed production – “Not since quotas were introduced over 30 years ago has agriculture faced such large scale changes as are now arising as we anticipate dairy based growth in a post EU quota system from 2015.  The current buoyancy within the agriculture sector has instilled a confidence in all involved to seize this opportunity and align with the right partners to capitalise on the excellent reputation Ireland has as a food producer as we move towards competing in a global market”.

Safecontractor Accreditation

Compound Feed Engineering (CFE) has been awarded accreditation from Safecontractor for its commitment to achieving excellence in health and safety. Safecontractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises very high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors. The company’s application for Safecontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business.

Con Lynch (CEO) says Safecontractor accreditation will enhance the company’s ability to attract new contracts and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its customers, staff and insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.

Safecontractor is applicable to most sectors although it is particularly relevant to food & feed manufacturing, property, facilities management, retail and leisure sectors, all of which are big users of contracted services.

John Kinge, technical director of Safecontractor said, "Major organisations simply cannot afford to run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies in place."

"More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that feed milling plant maintenance is done. The firm’s high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.

Safecontractor plays a vital role in supporting our clients in meeting their compliance needs, whilst working with their contractors as they progress through the accreditation process.”

Under the Safecontractor scheme, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website.

Client-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Over one hundred and seventy major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.
